Status change on attaining NQT

During my Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP) year, I was well aware of status, assertiveness and rights in the classroom, but because I was training, I didn't believe I had teacher status or deserved the rights discussed in the assertiveness article. Once I gained Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) status, I felt completely different in the classroom and the staffroom. This internal change of status, self-belief and confidence has made a huge difference to my classroom experience. Now that I assert my rights and status, I am able to achieve much more easily my lesson objectives. Time management has improved, as has behaviour in the classroom as I now have a much better idea of the classroom environment I want to achieve and feel vindicated in my demands on the pupils. I still have a lot to learn, but self-belief is a huge step on the way to being the teacher I aspire to be.
